The Final Necessity
Adam awoke to darkness, with grit in his mouth and his ears ringing. He lay still, wondering, trying to recall – and then a sense of the sheer strangeness of it came to him and he sat up abruptly – and just as abruptly dropped back again with a deep groan. His head was not in a fit state for such sudden movement – and every part of his body ached.
Slowly he took stock. He could move: that was to the good. He didn’t sense anything broken: that much was also on the credit side of the ledger. And, best of all, his seeking, groping fingers touched on the familiar feel of chill metal. His hand closed about the haft in glad reassurance; he still had his sword; all was not lost.
